In November of 2009, as a part of Reading Is Fundamental's fall programming, Totem Tale: A Tall Story from Alaska will be read to over 40,000 children at Washington D.C.-area elementary schools.
To support that programming, author Deb Vanasse, and illustrator Erik Brooks have pulled together a few extra special items and collected them here. We hope that you enjoy the book as much as we enjoyed making it!
The Author
Deb Vanasse is the author or nine Alaska books published by Penguin, Houghton Mifflin, Globe-Pequot, and Sasquatch. She writes children's books, young adult novels, travel books, and non-fiction. Alaska has been her home for 29 years.
The Illustrator
Erik Brooks is the illustrator of 13 children's books. He attended elementary school in Anchorage, Alaska, and holds tight to those wild days in the woods. Today, he writes and draws from his home in Winthrop, Washington.
Reading Is Fundamental, Inc. (RIF), founded in 1966, motivates children to read by working with them, their parents, and community members to make reading a fun and beneficial part of everyday life. RIF's highest priority is reaching underserved children from birth to age 8. Through community volunteers in every state and U.S. territory, RIF provides 4.6 million children with 16 million new, free books and literacy resources each year.
